Well, it's a good question certainly. It's actually very similar to the question as to why for example it costs more to have a wedding than say a birthday.

While there are a number of people involved in the new year's party besides myself, here are a couple of general answers (not just for Salsa parties):

1) The entertainers charge more. That's just how the industry works. If you want to hire someone on new years, they charge more. Why? Same reasons the party itself costs more... read on.

2) When you look at running events or a bar or some club as a business, you have to make the revenues and profits for the whole year add up, not just those for an individual night. The whole industry is set up traditionally so that a certain amount of "premium" nights exist, and/or are specially invented. Tickets for these nights cost more, but they also subsidize the lower revenues on "regular" nights, looking at it from an annual perspective. July 4th, various holiday dates, and of course Christmas/New Year's are common ones, in addition to anniversaries and other special dates that venues come up with.

3) Supply and demand. There is a big demand for venues on New Years, thus the price of renting a venue is higher. Similarly, there are a lot of people that want to come to parties, since that's the tradition, and with space limited, the price of tickets is appropriately higher.

4) Indeed, for NYE more is done for you. Food, champagne, more security, decorations, more advertising, more staff, longer hours, etc. etc. etc. All of that costs more.

5) A lot of people who throw/staff new years parties would rather go to a party themselves, rather than work. Much the same as 1) above, staff costs more, and also the organizers themselves wouldn't put the event on if they didn't make more.

If you're on a budget, for parties like the Salsa NYE Gala for example, there are ways around it, such as volunteering, or doing some promoting, organizing a group, etc. Contact me if you're interested.

Happy holidays,
-Olaf

: Why is it that on New Years promoters charge 4-6 times what a salsa party regularly costs? It is the same venues, the same music, the same people, no special performers... is the champagne and appetizers they provide THAT expensive? What do other salseros think? Do you also see these prices as ridiculous? btw my intention is not to criticize this website's party I just truly want to know what others think... am I being stingy?
